Time is like a river, and so are we
The idea that we cannot step into the same river, because the water that was there moments ago has flowed onward, is an idea put forth by the Greek Philosopher Heraclitus sometime in 4th century BCE. I’ve looked to the ancient philosophers for guidance and help for many years and this one is a good starting point. The river is a symbol for life, time and places, and now I suggest for people as well.
Few people can go through life without changing. We are changed by the experiences we have and the people we meet. We are changed by the challenges we face, and whether or not we overcome them.
I want to change for the better
Don’t we all? The sentiment is great and the outcome is a fantastic goal. But guess what? Only YOU get to decide if you’ve changed for the better. Not anyone else. Only YOU get to decide if you’re happy, or if you’re making growth towards what you want, and who you want to be. Too often, we see people try to stop their own changes, because they are afraid of how others will react. In that scenario, they have handed over the power of their happiness to another and then find themselves resentful that they aren’t in bliss. It’s like trying to dam up the river, when we stop ourselves or our partner from growing. The water becomes stagnant, and so do we. During the rainy season, the force of the water on the dam becomes insistent, and powerful, and it take a lot of energy for the dam to keep holding.
